The Project
Andrew Carruthers has spent decades building violins by hand in Santa Rosa, CA. We spent 17 days following him through the construction of a single instrument, start to finish.
The Content
Filmed over 17 days and edited down from nearly 24 hours of footage, Carruthers' Violin is a 10-minute documentary short that follows the complete process of building a violin by hand. Close-up process work, natural sound design, and patient pacing let the craft carry the film.
The Impact
The film won a Muse Awards Gold in 2023 and was an Official Webby Awards Nominee in 2025 for Independent Short Film, one of the most competitive categories in online video. It introduced Carruthers' work to an audience well beyond his existing clientele.
